What Materials are used?

I focus on locally-sourced, sustainably-made materials including natural fabrics (100% wool, cotton, or silk), handmade accessories, and vintage buttons and findings in wood or metal. Plastics and synthetics are sometimes used to create a desired look, but very sparingly and typically are upcycled, hand-me-down, or remnants from earlier projects. Waste not, want not!

How long does character creation take?

From initial idea to finished figure, it can take anywhere from 3 to 4 weeks. In addition to 40 – 60 hours of physical labor, I spend a lot of time designing and conceptualizing how to tell a full visual story in my artistic voice. I also frequently run my designs by my creative team (er – my hubby and daughter!) to make sure I’m not the only one in love with the character.

Are these really handmade?

I do EVERY stitch in every character. Below you can see me putting hand-felted spots on a giraffe and crafting a basket out of 100% cotton cording. I design and hand-craft all clothing and any objects within a figure’s “environment.” Accessories are rarely purchased unless the desired look simply isn’t achievable in my shop, and that will always be noted in the description and/or communicated to the customer.

Can I get a character just like one of your past works?

Just like? No. Similar? Yes!
Each piece is unique, and while a second creature may be similar, you will always be able to tell them apart. Because each piece is hand-made and I’m always improving my techniques and processes, it’s impossible to create identical figures. Each character that comes out of my shop is a unique individual with their own story, and I always welcome collaboration on what their story might be!

Can I request a particular creature?

I am happy to take requests. Remember that these are artistic interpretations, so while they might capture the spirit of a specific pet, inspiration photo, or character, the likeness will be suggestive and not portraiture. If you have a specific animal, color combination, or character in mind, please contact me so we can discuss how best to bring your ideas to life.
